I was texting one of my friends and she asked what I was having for dinner and when I said seared ahi tuna she asked what restaurant I was going to…. Hilarious because 1. Totally not out of the ordinary for me to know what I’m ordering at a restaurant before I even go (I always do extensive menu research beforehand) and 2. I think seared ahi has a “risotto complex” and by that I mean people think it’s difficult to make but it’s not! Ahi tuna is probably the easiest fish to cook in my opinion. In fact, if you are buying high quality ahi tuna, you barely need to cook it at all! Here’s how to make it! Also shout out to Mitch for being the brains behind this recipe tonight! It’s was perfect.

Ingredients
Blackened Ahi
- 2 ahi tuna steaks
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 2 tsp salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, paprika
- 1/2 tsp cayenne
For the Bowl
- 1 cup brown rice
- 1 tomato diced
- 1 15 oz can black beans
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 avocado
- Pico de Gallo
Instructions
- Season your ahi tuna steaks with either a premade blackened seasoning or the seasonings mentioned above
- Heat a tablespoon of avocado oil in a cast iron skillet for about 1 minute (shop my favorite one from Amazon in my highlights - currently on sale for $23!)
- Add the ahi and cook for about 4-6 minutes each side
- Serve with brown rice, diced tomato, green onion, black beans, shredded lettuce, avocado and pico de gallo
Notes
Cooking time will vary based on the thickness of the tuna and how rare you want it. Mine were really thick and I didn’t want it too raw on the inside so it took about 12 minutes total.
